I have learned over the years of having sheep that for The Muddy Homestead operations it is best to divide the sheep in half and only breed one half at a time. Which means there are 11 ewes ready to deliver this month.
Hair sheep, we have kathadin and black belly baradoes, have a gestation period of 5 months and the first delivery is usually on the day. Over the five months the ewes are monitored body condition and grass availability.
Two weeks before the delivery date the ewes are given a cdt shot so that it is passed on the the
lambs at birth for protection.
Once the date approaches I usually make nightly checks as they sheep I have usually lamb early morning, about 3 am and I like to make sure things are going along well with out intervention. I only intervene if there is a struggle or difficulty.
