Winter prep for the Garden

When people hear the word garden they think of the results you see when there are plants growing and vegetables to pick, but there is so much more that goes into a garden. Yes there is pulling weeds, watering, and picking harvest, but even before that there is a lot that goes into the garden experience. Gardening starts in the winter, when the ground is not yet ready for plants but seeds are started and soil it tended and prepared.

In order to continue to grow in my gardening experience I have decided to start seeds this winter. I have started quite a bit of different kind in hopes of also selling some of the plants to help others and continue my learning. So far I have started tomato, pepper, egg plant, cucumber, and squash. I also decided to try my hand at some flowers so I have marigolds, snap dragons, and impatients started I have begun learning timing of when to start seeds and how to plan out spacing with lights.

The seeds next step is to be transplanted and put in the greenhouse. The problem is the greenhouse is not quite done but we started putting the plastic over it yesterday and hope to finish is up this week so that the already started seeds can move out there and I can start more under the lights. The greenhouse will be for seed and plant growth along with an area for the chicks when they are born.

Due to recently building a house and rearranging the property use their is no current garden ready to be planted. There is a space that has been covered for months to help begin killing the grass for use but it has not been tilled or anything. That is one of the next things on the list in garden prep to be ready for planting once the last frost comes through. The garden will grow mainly squash, as that is the main vegetable that is used here at The Muddy Homestead.

If you are considering a garden, go for it. Be sure that what you plant is what you will use, many people will tell you what you need to plant but if you don't cook or eat certain things then don't plant it. When the garden is no longer new and pretty and the upkeep increases the purpose of each plant will be what keeps you working on it, which is why squash is the main thing we grow.

Grow your garden to meet your needs, which is why we are doing things a b

it differently.
